6. GUEST SPEAKER
Leanne Nyiri (Marketing Manager Life Care Hospitals), Dana Govender (Heart & Stroke Foundation) & Bernie Mothilal (Client Services Advisor- Live Care Entabeni)
Background
The Chairman had been approached by HSF (Dana) about the possible joining of “forces” of Life Care Hospitals & HSF & the members of the existing Natal Bypass Club, to a form a group known as “Mended Hearts”. Mended Hearts were groups of heart & bypass patients, which had been formed in different regions around SA and were run in conjunction with Life Care & HSF & due to their expertise, knowledge & availability of specialists, doctors, nurses from various departments, the above ladies were asked to address the club of the pros & cons of Mended Hearts. There had been various arguments for and against this “merger”, by members of the Natal Bypass Club, but the main point of concern, which had been raised by the current chairman, was that the club was not growing, as no visitations were being made to any hospitals by any members & it was not always possible to call on guest speakers.
Shane introduced the ladies, who were asked that present & answer any questions.
The members of the Bypass Club listened to what both parties had to say, asked various questions and it was decided that 3 items be voted on – 1 whether members agreed that there be this “merger” (all were in favor) – 2 how often the member would meet – this was also voted on & agreed that it would be every second month, the first meeting being on 14 February 2011, of which members would be advised accordingly by “Mended Hearts – KZN” and 3, what time the meeting was to be held & this vote was that it be between 14:00 and 16:00.
The monies that were in the Natal Bypass Club, would remain in the club account and a final balance, after all expenses had been paid for the End of the Year function, would be signed off by the Chairman, the Treasurer & Administration at the next committee meeting, which would be in January 2011 (date & venue to be advised). The balance of the monies in the bank account, would remain untouched, until a decision is or has to be made by members of the existing Natal Bypass Club, as at the date of this meeting, together with the committee members (existing & new), as detailed hereunder.
In the interests of the Natal Bypass Club members, it was decided by vote that the following members would be present at any meeting in the future of the “Mended Hearts” - the members would be Brain Moore, Shirley Piek, Shirley Willet, Colin Hall, Dan Laban & Shane Newman.
7. NEXT MEETING
The next meeting would be held by the “Mended Hearts” group on the 14th of February 2011 – venue & times to be advised by Life Care Hospitals & HSF, through e-mail & postal. It was promised that as this meeting was going to be on Valentines Day, this function would be special.
Should you have any further queries on Mended Hearts you can contact Leanne Nyiri at the Entabeni Hospital (031 – 204 1300).

GUEST SPEAKER
Mr John Cave - Food Scientist
John was introduced & he provided a brief CV.
What was important from a dietary point were the following points : an Apple a day (Vitamen K), Vit C, onions for immune system, broccoli for skin problems, cabbage for high nutrition value, carrots & sweet potatoes (Vit A), not to use sun block or in moderation, as a body requires Vit D, figs are high in alkalinity (body can fight cancer better)
A lot of the information that John shared with the members was on what to eat, it's nutriunal value & what not to eat.
Everybody is different & we all need different food & nutrients.
John manufactures his own Lecithin, which he sells, which you can use over your cereal & is soluble - dosage 1 teaspoon/day. You can contact John on 031-2667959 should you have require Lecithin or have any questions. One needs to use Lecithin slowly in the beginning or you could dislodge a "blockage" & cause further problems, instead of dissolving a clot.
Some of the benefits of the Lecithin - weight loss, food for brain, helps with gall stones & kidney problems, prevents vascular disease & degeneration of arterial disease, helps improve the elasticity of blood vessels, prevents cholesterol, greater general health.
NEXT MEETING
The next meeting would be on Wednesday the 6th of October 2010 at the Conference suite at the Entabeni Hospital at 17:00 for 17:30. Please attend as a decision will be made wrt item 4 re merger/take-over of the club.

4. GENERALThe following items were brought to the attention of all present :· Finance & Administrationo Treasurer’s report – § Shirley Piek had advised that the finances were still stable, with approximately R12k banked.§ Subs for 2010 (to remain at R40) to be paid to Shirley asapv Natal Bypass Club banking details – Account Name – Natal Bypass club, Standard Bank of SA, Branch code 042826, Account number 257360549· Impilo drugs – George Barnes gave an update on the situation & he will get back to the club with a revised quote.· Westville Cardiac Hospital Walk – Please support this fun, easy, slow, safe enjoyable walk every last Wednesday of every month at 17:30 - meet at North Beach Promenade (outside Mini Town) & walk to Addington Beach. Jim Brown volunteered to do the survey. Shane would forward Jim’s name.
5. GUEST SPEAKERDr MS Salduker (Psychiatrist)The chairman introduced Dr Salduker the resident psychiatrist at Entabeni hospital. The notes hereunder are from the presentation and from questions that were asked by those present. The doctor reminded us of the difference between a psychologist & a psychiatrist, one dealing with the mind (projection of brain – abstract) & the other (psychiatry) dealing with the function of the real thing – the brain. It is common that patients are referred for assessment either prior or post bypass operations. A bypass patient has 2 levels of change in the brain – anxiety, having to deal with this massive operation & the other change being the possibility of depression.Depression – is a clinical observation, dealing with the cognitive memory, temperament change, change in energy level, agitation.Anxiety – deals with worry, fear or phobia – subtle in brain, which is the result of constant worrying & wants to avoid or prevent the danger (of the operation). Stress is often referred to as a disease, but is an associated anxiety, where the brain is telling the body.Anxiety is the “fright, flight syndrome”, where the response can be seen through the entire body – heart starts beating faster, breathing then becomes faster, muscles can become tense & all this can be done in the fraction of a second where the brain is sending signals to the body. All these dramatic & quick changes in the body, draws blood from all the non-essential organs & transfers the blood to the muscles. So if a person has constant anxiety then, the heart pressure is constant & therefore cannot cope.Anxiety also causes such things as irritable bowel syndrome & in some cases GPs treat the patient by prescribing medicines & miss the problem of anxiety. Anxiousness can therefore cause high blood pressure & as the brain controls the body, a panic attack can cause asthma, which at the end of the day is brought about by anxiety. A person becomes anxious when they hear or feel that there is something not right with their heart & can develop a phobia, which is some times the reason that these “heart murmurs, pains, etc” and which do not reveal anything on the ECG, as an anxiety attach does not have to have a reason to attack – it is a rapid automatic response, which increases the heart beat and/or causes sweating, etc.. So a panic attack – can result in a sharp chest painAnxious people develop heart problems – 1 in 3 people have some form of anxiety from mild to paranoia.Sense of doom generates anxiety & a panic attack feels like a heart attack as a result of the adrenal levels increasing & the serotonin levels decreasing. In the USA half of the cardiac patients are being treated for anxiety.Another common problem is people who suffer from constant tension headaches, which affects the spine – we need to learn to relax, as the first organ to suffer is the brain, which can develop brain disorders. We only use +- 18 to 21% of our brain & we start to lose our memory from (Ed - can’t remember) – sorry from the age of 38 – brain cells do not regenerate. Exercise keeps the brain healthy. In a lot of the cases these panic attacks can cost the patient R30k, as the diagnosis is not cardiac. It is therefore important to look after our mental health & not just our diet, exercise & stress, etcThank you Dr Salduker, for a very interesting & enjoyable talk.

GUEST SPEAKERHeart of the Matter by Dr Cassim HansaThe chairman introduced Dr Cassim Hansa, the resident cardiologist at Entabeni hospital. The notes hereunder are from the presentation and from questions that were asked by those present.A presentation was made by Dr Hansa and he started by saying that there is a connection between the physical & metaphysical of the human being of the heart and brain – “feelings from the heart”, “broken heart”, “wearing ones heart on their sleeve”, etc. The human heart develops in the fetus at 12 weeks & at this stage, no brain has been formed. The heart pumps +- 300l of blood an hour, +-100 000 beats per day, through a blood vessel system that is +-100 000 km long. The heart is similar to the motor car engine with valves & an electrical system.Dr Hansa went on to explain how the heart pumps, by means of his presentation.A cardiologist is like a plumber & deals with the “corrosion” of the human “pipes” (atherosclerosis) – cardiologists do not cure heart disease but alleviate the problems. Bypasses can increase & improve your lifespan, whereas stents decrease the symptoms but do not increase lifespan. Stents do stop working, for what they are intended to do, over time, but cannot be removed or replaced – can lead to a bypass in some cases or insertion of more stents. When cardiologist insert stents the arteries can be blown up to 18 – 21 bars – a considerable pressure, bearing in mind a car tyre takes 2 kph. Most stent patients are placed on Plavex (Anticoagulants medication) for at least 1 year & the bruising which occurs is a good sign that the medication is working. Plavex should only be stopped if in an emergency. A Beta Blocker like Carloc slows heart rate, as scar tissue (heart muscle dies after a myocardial infarction (heart attack) can affect heart rate. It is advisable to see your cardiologist at least once a year. One of the biggest problems with bypass patients is not completing a rehabilitation program and living in fear. Most medical aids will contribute to the costs of rehabilitation for six months, after a bypass. Fat is a major problem for the heart, as more blood has to be pumped through more capillaries, causing the heart to work more, fat collects around vessels, the heart & other organs, causing pressure on these organs. As Dr Hansa had patients to see, the members appreciated & enjoyed the time he had taken to speak to us. Thank you Dr Hansa, for the enjoyable talk.
NEXT MEETINGThe next meeting would be on Wednesday the 3rd of February 2010 at the Conference suite at the Entabeni Hospital at 17:00 for 17:30. The next gathering of members would therefore be at the DCC for the annual Christmas & End of Year function at Durban Country Club on the 29th of November 2009. The meetings for 2010 will be as follows :o 3 February 2010o 7 April 2010o 2 June 2010o 4 August 2010o 6 October 2010o 28 November 2010 (Annual luncheon)Kindly diarize the above dates. Please support your club.

3. TESTIMONIES FROM NEW VISITORSAlan Pather – Alan had been a road runner moist of his life, fit, had completed his Comrades and 6 years ago while on a run uphill & started having a bit of difficulty – started battling to even climb stairs. He underwent a stress test & an “angio” revealed that he had damaged arteries & was placed on medication to repair the damage – he gave up running. A year ago, while chairman of his running club, he woke up with “wind” – after 2 litres of Soda water, he collapsed at the doctors rooms. He is recovering well after his bypass & has started running again.· Colin Hall – Colin started having a difficult time firstly with what he thought was a “mossie” bite, which turned out to be a spider bite – within 3 hours he was placed on a drip & antibiotics. He then had a reaction to the antibiotics, suffered heart attack and received a bypass in March and 2 days later had a stroke. This man has made a remarkable recovery, after all this, in such a short space of time & the club wishes him all the very best in his recovery.· Sheldene Stuart –Sheldene had no history of cholesterol or any cardiac disease & was diagnosed with 2 “blockages” – the stents inserted failed & after receiving a bypass, developed pneumonia. She then developed fibrillation & a high pulse rate and after a lengthy stay in hospital, she has recovered well. Before writing these minutes, I (Chairman) was approached by Sheldene to assist as a “Heart to Heart” Counsellor for the Natal Bypass Club. Sheldene will be providing a service to the Umhlanga hospital – welcome Sheldene & many thanks for your willingness to assist those, who may need some encouragement & somebody to listen to either before their bypass or after, at Umhlanga.· Lynn Alborough – Lynn had his bypass 5 weeks ago & is recuperating well.We welcome & wish them good health.

7. GUEST SPEAKERThe chairman introduced Ms Jenny Russel & thanked her for taking the time to come & speak to our members. Well done Jenny! - keep up this unselfish, devoted work you are doing.Jenny introduced herself & advised that Diabetes SA is a Non-Profit organization, which is part of 147 diabetes organizations in 121 countries and that she has dedicated her time to helping others with diabetes. She stated some facts about diabetes, in that there are more people dying of diabetes than Aids and every 10 seconds somebody is dying from diabetes, every 10 seconds 2 people are being diagnosed with diabetes and every 30 seconds a lower limb of a person is being amputated. Fifty percent of diabetes sufferers die from a heart attack, 50% of people who have diabetes are not aware that they have the disease and 80% of diabetes sufferers are type 2 diabetes. Type 2 sufferers are usually people who are diagnosed with the disease, if they are 30 years or older. The largest cause of problems with diabetes is with the kidney and bladder, in that damaged is caused by elevated blood sugar levels, which is not reversible, but can be controlled with medication and therefore patients face, in most cases, premature death. A further complication of diabetes in the human body is that the pancreas fails to supply insulin and the pancreas becomes damaged by the bodies own immune system. The main contributing problems that cause diabetes is with overweight, an unhealthy life style & stress. With the weight problem, the body cannot produce sufficient insulin required for the excess body fat & causes the pancreas to “over work”. An ideal diabetic reading is in the region of 4.5 to 6.5 and if it is above 8 then one should consult a doctor immediately. Some of the symptoms of diabetes are :v Very thirstyv Excess urinationv Tirednessv Sores that don’t healv Dry itchy skinv Rapid gain loss or weight gainv Blurred visionThe following are complications as a result of diabetes :v Cardiovascular disease – heart has to pump “syrup”v High blood pressurev Eye disease – cataractsv Kidney disease – patients who have to be on a dialyses machine 4 hours at a time 3 times a weekv Nerve damagev Sexual dysfunctionThe following are recommendations of what to do, should you be diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes :v Test your sugar level every dayv Take medicationv Exercise at least 15 minutes every dayv Eat healthilyv Check feet every dayThe following are people who you should consult with if you have diabetes :v Endocrinologistv Dietitianv PodiatristThe following are some of the foods to eat & the quantityv Plenty vegetables & saladsv Some starch – this is converted to sugar in the blood stream & if the kilojoules are not burnt off by exercise, the sugar turns to fatv "Madumbies" & Sweet potatoes are better to eatv Quantity of starch should be the size of clenched fistv Quantity of protein (meat) should be the size of a open hand (excluding fingers)v Oils – little oil as possible & this includes olive oil, etcv Fruit & vegetables – much as you want, but be careful the sweet fruitsv Bread & pastries – cut outv Eat small portions – i.e. 6 meals instead of 3Should you have any queries or require any further information, Jenny Russell can be contacted on 084 717 7443.
